Scripture from Five Perspectives

You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. John 5:39

Nearby a certain high school lies a sandstone ridge with several prominent cliffs. Inscribed upon the stones at the top of the cliffs are the names and initials of many past students of the high school. Each name scraped into the stone is essentially saying “I was here. I traversed the woods. I crossed the creek. I climbed to the top of these cliffs. I was here.” Each name testifies that the author was there. The same is true for a signature on a dotted line. That signature is a testimony that the author was there and has agreed to whatever is above the dotted line.

The entire Bible is, in a way, God’s signature to us. In Scripture we read God’s testimony of who He is, what He has done, and what He has promised to still accomplish. Essentially God is saying “I was here. I traversed this world without a single sin. I crossed the river of death. I climbed up out of death on Easter morning. I was here.” Scripture is God’s testimony that He was here on this earth as one of us in order to save us. He signed on the dotted line of His Old and New Testaments that He has agreed to all the promises He has for us in His Word.

Now those names scratched into the top of a cliff or inscribed on a dotted line with a fountain pen remain a testimony for as long as the name lasts. The thing is, those names do not last forever. Names on the cliff from even several decades ago are wearing away, and some are already scratched over with more recent names. Documents are lost or even purposefully burned when the terms are completed. The testimony of those names does not last. The testimony of our God though, cannot be permanently lost. God has promised to preserve His testimony forever so that all who read and hear will know that “God was here.”

Savior, thank you for giving me your own testimony of all your saving work. Amen.
