2026-10-02 Around the Throne of God

Michael and all Angels

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!” Isaiah 6:1-3

What a glorious scene! The Lord sitting upon His highly exalted throne, surrounded by the stately seraphim angels. They were magnificent creatures with six wings. We might stand in awe of these glorious angels, but more so, may we learn from them.
They were awesome creatures, who were able to fly, and their voices shook the foundations of the temple, yet they were humble, using four of their wings to cover their faces and their feet before God’s throne. How much more shouldn’t we humble ourselves before God?

As glorious and holy as they were, they stood in awe and constant praise of the thrice holy God, crying out, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!” Shouldn’t our hearts be filled all the more to give all glory and honor to Him who sits on the throne?

The Apostle John tells us that this was Jesus sitting on His throne ruling over all things in heaven and on earth. (John 12:41) May we respond like Isaiah, who became all the more aware of his own sinfulness when he saw the holiness of the LORD. One of those holy angels assisted in Isaiah’s cleansing by bringing a coal from the altar of Christ’s sacrifice to purge away his sin.

And may we, like Isaiah, be moved not only to praise Christ with our lips, but to serve Him in love and devotion, who made the ultimate sacrifice for us. May we ever sing:

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity! Amen
The Lutheran Hymnal 246:1
