Growth in Trials
And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. Romans 5:3-5
Many times during our brief stay here on earth, we will be subjected to the pain of loss. Loss is one of many tribulations that we, as people, endure.
The sadness is sharp at first when you come to the realization that your loved one has left this earth. At first, you can’t believe it. You recall that last conversation you had with them and think to yourself, “He can’t really be gone. Why, I just talked to him the other day.” And then that sick feeling creeps in and you fully realize you won’t speak to him again during this life. However, the next thought that the Christian has is one of hope and joy. Jesus is welcoming the redeemed one into heaven with the words, “ Well done, My faithful servant.”
Losing loved ones is something Jesus can relate to. When Jesus learned that His good friend Lazarus had recently died, He wept bitterly. He did this, even though He knew He would raise Lazarus from the dead in short order. Jesus groaned within Himself, in pain, at the loss of His dear friend. So do we. However, we look to that same Jesus as the great One who raises us from death to everlasting, joyous life.
Reunion with loved ones, praising our Saviour, and weeping for joy, all await those who hold fast to Christ. We look forward to life everlasting with our Lord, and this comforts us after the many losses we face.
“ If death my portion be,
Then death is gain to me
And Christ my Life forever,
From whom death cannot sever.
Come when it may, He’ll shield me,
To Him I wholly yield me. Amen.”

Lord, help us to never despair when we lose those redeemed children of Yours, whom we love. Help us to look forward to our glorious reunion in heaven. Amen.
