Sermon on the Mount
"Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.” Matthew 7:24-25
There is a church in Marquette, Michigan, which is built on a hillside. Across the street, slabs of stone erupt out of the mossy ground. The bedrock, which the city is built upon, makes above-ground appearances throughout the city. There is even a rumor that the church’s foundation rests on the bedrock of the hillside. With such a secure foundation, the church will likely never have issues with settling or shifting foundations.
As immovable, unshakable, and rock solid as the physical foundation of this church is; the spiritual foundation of those who make up its part in the Holy Christian Church is even greater. Built on the rock of Jesus Christ, their foundation is truly immovable, unshakable, and rock solid. Bedrock can be moved through the effort of man with pickaxes and jackhammers, but Christ’s grace remains immovable even by those who try to limit or change it. Bedrock can be shaken by earthquakes and other natural phenomena, but God’s promises are unshakable in the face of natural calamities or other storms in life. Bedrock can even be ground down to sand with enough time and patience or brute force, but Christ’s love for His Church does not wear away with the passing of time or the brutish consequences of His followers’ sins.
Christ is truly the foundation every person needs in their life, and He, Himself, is the bedrock upon which He builds His church. Therefore, no storm of life can wash away His guiding and guarding presence.
How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said
Who unto the Savior for refuge have fled?
