The Beatitudes
“Blesséd are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” Matthew 5:9 (2)
In the previous devotion, we saw how God took troublemakers like us and transformed us into peacemakers. This began when the Prince of Peace pacified the righteous anger of God. Then He sent out the Gospel of peace by which the Holy Spirit filled our hearts with peace.
Thus we began our trek along the only way of peace. It is on this journey that the blesséd show themselves to be peacemakers. Peace cannot be contained. Peter and John said, “We cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:20). Jeremiah (20:9) explained: “His word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, and I could not.” Peace within must come out. It is a way of life.
Sharing our Prince of Peace with others is the ultimate way to make peace. Those who believe will rejoice to learn that they are at peace with God. They join us on the trek to eternal peace. Such peacemakers we are as we talk about Jesus with family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers. In addition, we can spread peace throughout the world by praying for and supporting pastors, missionaries, and mission helpers, so they can carry the peace of God where we cannot.
Peacemaking also shows itself in an earthly sense. Paul writes, “If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men” (Romans.12:18). How can we enjoy or share the peace of God, if we are engaged in conflict with one another? Therefore, we do what we can to resolve conflicts and live peaceably with others.
Just as God is the great Peacemaker, so are His children. So Jesus says, “For they shall be called sons of God.” We may be so called by other believers. Even unbelievers can see that followers of the Prince of Peace are themselves peacemakers. Above all, God calls us His sons. Where the Father is, there the sons will be gathered together. What blessédness is ours.
