Apostles Creed
But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Titus 3:4-7 (ESV)
When bookstores were still popular, most stores had a ‘self-help’ section. The self-help section suggested: “You can do whatever you put your mind to.”
In the 3rd Article of the Apostle’s Creed, we confess that God has spiritually changed us. The Holy Spirit, has through the Word of God, sanctified us; separated us from sin and dedicated us to God.
There is a part of us that always wants to take credit for that work, to claim, “I did it.” But based on Scripture we declare, “I cannot by my own reason or strength, believe in Jesus Christ my Lord, nor come to Him. The Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith.” It’s not a statement favored by the writers of ‘self-help’ books.
It is true, though. God is working on me through His Word and Sacrament. I’m not making me better. In fact, left to myself my life would get horribly worse.
The Scripture teaches me that God took the initiative. He determined to save me and He made it a reality…without my consent, input or help. He did it because of a quality in Him, His Grace. He did it so that I should be an heir of eternal life.
By grace! None dare lay claim to merit;
Our works and conduct have no worth.
God in His love sent our Redeemer,
Christ Jesus to this sinful earth;
His death did for our sins atone,
And we are saved by grace alone.
The Lutheran Hymn al 373:2
