Apostles Creed
By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. Hebrews 11:3 (ESV)
It’s one of my favorite passages in the book of Job. After all that has happened to him, Job complains, and the LORD responds, putting Job in his place with a question (Job 38:4 NKJV): “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding.”
I imagine the Almighty asking the same thing of the evolutionist who boastfully declares we are all the result of a cosmic ka-boom. “Excuse me, sir, but where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding.” Humankind has two choices, to believe the word of a man who wasn’t there . . . or to listen to the Creator – who was there – tell us how He did it.
The Creation of this world is a matter of faith, plain and simple, because none of us were there in the beginning. As Christians we understand that and declare: “I Believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth.”
When we confess these words, we also recognize that all the persons of the Holy Trinity were involved in the Creation because the Scriptures teach it. We find the Spirit of God in Genesis 1:2. We also find the Son of God was present in the first chapter of John’s Gospel (Verses 3 and 14).
We should marvel at God’s Creation and see in it both His wisdom and power.
We all believe in one true God,
Who created earth and heaven,
The Father, who to us in love
Hath the right of children given.
He both soul and body feedeth,
All we need He doeth provide us;
He thro’ snares and perils leadeth,
Watching that no harm betide us.
He careth for us day and night,
All things are governed by His might.
The Lutheran Hymnal 251:1
