1. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 teaches us, “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” Take a moment to reflect on different circumstance and situations, good and bad. Give thanks to the Lord for His steadfast goodness and promises. Pray for faith to trust God’s will is good and that He will work all things for good, even when we can’t see it.
2. Paul also writes, “I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content.” (Philippians 4:11) Meditate on God’s unchanging nature. List some of God’s unchanging attributes (example, He is gracious). Do any passages of Scripture come to mind that assure us of His unchanging promises? Look them up or write them out.
3. Read the account of the conversion of the jailer at Philippi in Acts 16:16-34. Paul and Silas exhibited a spirit of thanksgiving by singing hymns after having been unjustly punished and with their feet fastened in stocks. What are we saying to family, friends, and coworkers when we give thanks in difficult times? Pray for the Lord to bless such opportunities.
4. The book of Psalms especially encourages the giving of thanks to God. Read the following psalm verses and note what the writer is thankful for: Psalm 18:49; 30:4; 35:18; 105:1; 119:62.
