Michael and all Angels
And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! Revelation 19:10
There are few things more intriguing, awe-inspiring, mystical, and yet comforting than angels. Angels are amazing creatures created by God. They are described in many grand and glorious ways in the Bible. They appear as chariots of fire; as stately, glorious beings with six wings; as four-headed creatures engulfed in fire; and as ordinary men. They are most often seen protecting God’s people or bringing God’s message.
It’s no surprise then that for centuries the church has celebrated the angels with special feast days. September twenty-ninth was considered a major festival in the church year known as St. Michael the Archangel’s Day. Other angels were celebrated on other days in the year. In the twentieth century, the day was changed to include all angels.
It is appropriate to have a day celebrating the angels as long as it is a day to worship God, thanking Him for giving His angels as “ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?” (Hebrews 1:14)
In the opening passage, an unnamed angel was announcing to the Apostle John that “the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready.” (Revelation 19:7 NIV) John was so overjoyed and in awe that he fell down to worship the angel. The angel immediately rebuked him and said, “See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God!”
We are not to invoke, venerate, petition, or seek their guidance. Rather, we call upon God and thank Him for giving His angels charge over us to keep us in all our ways. (Psalm 91:10-12)
Thank You Lord, my heavenly Father, for giving your angels charge over me. May I always glorify You as the angels do. Amen
