1. Select a chapter of Proverbs and read through it. You will notice that much of what is written is given in the form of directions, advice, and principles to live by. When God lays out His holy will and commands, we know that these are teachings of the Law. After each verse, consider how we have failed to practice the proverb in our lives and write down your considerations.
2. Next, draw a cross through all those wrongdoings. Then, on a separate sheet of paper, consider your Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Consider how He kept each of those proverbs in His life and write down your considerations. Once finished, at the bottom write, “This is my righteousness.”
3. In consideration of wisdom, re-read the Table of Duties in Martin Luther’s Small Catechism. After each section, first meditate upon how you have fallen short of it, how Christ has lived and died for you in each place, and how then you may show the praise of His name in each duty. Then, offer a prayer in each section in which you thank God for the blessings He gives, confess your failures and plead for forgiveness, and ask Him to help you fulfill your duties.
