Noah
“I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.” Genesis 9:13 NIV
After the flood, God made a covenant with Noah—a promise that He would never again destroy the earth by water. To seal this covenant, God placed a rainbow in the sky as a visible reminder of His faithfulness. Luther notes that God’s acceptance of Noah’s offering and His promise never again to destroy the earth by flood (Genesis 8:21–22) were signs of divine favor. This was not just a promise for Noah; it is for all generations.
God’s covenant reveals His character. He is faithful, trustworthy, and unchanging. Even when humanity fails, God keeps His word. The rainbow reminds us that His mercy triumphs over judgment and that His promises endure forever.
The rainbow also points to something greater—the new covenant in Jesus Christ. Hebrews 8:6 says, “But Jesus has now obtained a superior ministry, and to that degree he is the mediator of a better covenant, which has been established on better promises.” By His death and resurrection, Jesus secured an eternal covenant of grace for all. Unlike the rainbow, a sign for our earthly life, the cross is the ultimate sign of God’s promise of forgiveness, reconciliation, and eternal life.
When storms and trials in this world come, remember this: God’s faithfulness is not seasonal; it is eternal. No matter the challenges we may face, His promises remain secure in Christ. The rainbow reminds us of mercy after judgment, and the cross reminds us of mercy instead of judgment.
Lord, thank You for being a covenant-keeping God. Thank You for Jesus, who sealed the new covenant with His blood. Help me trust Your promises when life feels uncertain. Amen.
