2026-06-25 Hawaii Volcanoes National Park: Incredible Power

God’s Fingerprints on National Parks

For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. Romans 1:20 (ESV)

Much of the time they appear quiet and harmless, but Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is home to two of the world’s most active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea. Lava rock from past eruptions covers old roads and blankets the ground. In May 2024 2,000 residents were forced to evacuate their homes due to dangerous lava flows.

Scientists can measure seismic activity and make predictions when an eruption may occur, but no one claims that human beings can do anything to control a volcano. The Apostle Paul writes that the things that have been made testify to God’s eternal power. The Creator had the power to make volcanoes, and He still controls them, just as Jesus had the power to control violent storms simply by speaking a word.

Standing in a massive, hardened lava lake or gazing out over a volcano, you can’t help but be awestruck. But that’s nothing compared to Judgment Day when we and all people will stand before the holy God. “The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all lawbreakers, and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 13:41-42 ESV).

That day will come suddenly without warning. Yet the Lord has ensured that we don’t have to dread it. We can look forward to it with great anticipation, for we know that Jesus has paid our debt of sin and has covered us with His perfect righteousness. Trust in Him and God couldn’t be happier with you.

My Savior paid the debt I owe
And for my sin was smitten;
Within the Book of Life I know
My name has now been written.
I will not doubt, for I am free,
And Satan cannot threaten me;
There is no condemnation!
