Reformation Week
Take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand! Ephesians 6:13
Have you ever had your words challenged in front of others? Perhaps someone of authority says, “Your letter to Mr. So-And-So was mean and hateful. Apologize!” To defend yourself is all but impossible. It seems easier just to take the lashing.
After his tower discovery, Martin Luther continued growing in his understanding of the Gospel of forgiveness and salvation in Jesus alone. He began to see other faults regarding matters of salvation as taught in Roman Catholicism. In 1517, he became particularly disgruntled with the selling of indulgences. Indulgence certificates were said to reduce one’s stay in purgatory. Purgatory was a supposed place for believers between death and heaven, a place for one to be purged (cleansed) from sins insufficiently dealt with in life. Purgatory was an error of its own, which Luther did not yet recognize. However, he was extremely angered by indulgences being bought and sold for money, as if buying one’s way into heaven! On October 31, 1517, he posted ninety-five theses, (statements for debate) challenging educated men to debate him on the topic.
Luther’s challenge did not sit well with Roman church leaders. And during the next three years, more challenges came against other of Rome’s non-Biblical teachings. In 1520, the Pope sent Luther a letter warning of excommunication for false teaching (heresy). Luther changed nothing. In 1521, the highest political power in Europe, Emperor Charles V, called Luther to a meeting (diet) at the city of Worms to settle matters in his kingdom. They challenged all of Luther’s writings. He could either retract them or be declared a public outlaw, wanted dead or alive! Strengthened by the Lord, rooted firmly on Scripture, Martin Luther stood his ground. He refused to retract one thing!
Are you quick to back down before those who challenge Christianity’s Biblical teaching on forgiveness, salvation, and life in Jesus alone and all related principles? Jesus is the dear Savior. The Bible is His Word of truth and life. Stand strong!
Lord, help me to stand in the evil days in which we live! Amen!
