Jesus the Evangelist
The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.” Jesus said to her … “the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.” Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.” The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, “Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” Then they went out of the city and came to Him. John 4:19-20, 23-26,28-30
Jesus took the conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well from him asking her for water to her asking Him for living water that He alone could give. He then led the woman to see her personal need for God’s forgiveness.
This is something we sinners certainly shy away from. Our need for repentance is both deeply personal and something our sinful nature does not want us to face up to. It is therefore not surprising that the woman raised a question that could sidetrack the more important matter at hand – namely the gift of forgiveness and salvation. Notice how Jesus discussed the question of where best to worship in such a way that the conversation returned to who is being worshiped and how.
Having led the woman to bring up the mission of the Messiah, Jesus revealed Himself to be the promised One, the very Savior of the world.
Lord Jesus, enable me to speak the Gospel to others – not as one who has all the answers, but as one knowing Him who does. Help me to invite others to “Come and see.” Amen.
